In the Wake of Apollo (1999)

"So what really has happened in the wake of Apollo ? Was it all politics ? Was it all a big hoax ? A dream ? Were we like a dog chasing a car just to mark our territory ?

Summer of 1999 I was mid-way through recording a lot of music and trying to find a focus to all of this when a documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first moon landing came on TV. I was struck by the awe with which the astronauts told of their adventures and in all of this the disappointment that in 30 years mankind has achieved no greater adventure.

Suddenly the pieces all came together. The memories and dreams formed in the wake of Apollo, man's madness, rituals, festivals and fixations with the moon, the ironic tranquility and the frustration and desire to get on with the next great adventure."

Destiny (1997)

Destiny:-
"In November 1996 I was flying over Hong Kong watching the multitude of rainbows forming and disappearing behind the plane as though chased by rainbows and I was mulling over my trip and about the events I'd witnessed or come across on my travels that have changed the lives of myself, my friends or a whole nation. The handover of Hong Kong, the certain death of a Greek Prime Minister, the kidnapping and subsequent execution of Miguel-Angel Blanco by ETA, the Red Cliff Village hideout of Mao and Chang Kai-chek against the Japanese and the indifference of the New Zealanders at the difficulty in forming a new government. All of this set my mind in motion as to why people accept or affect their own Destiny.

On returning to my new home in Madrid I set about writing with these thoughts in mind and created a series of warm, colourful pieces. At times sombre and at times lively and defiant, the recording would take me to many places finally resting in the Field that is Forever just outside my flat in Hamburg a year later."

Deep (1996)

"Having got the hang of midi and a few lessons in drum programming, I set about recording demos very much in the ambient genre using huge keyboard washes as a background and colouring the sounds with heavily treated voices and Guitars, Rainsticks, samples from my favourite Sci-fi movies and sea-life. The result were some pieces I'm still very proud of 5 years later like "Deep Sea" mixed in with some intense reflection "Song from a Rear View Mirror" and "The Ghost of Penrhyn Bay". So why call it "Deep" ? Q. If you could describe the author in a single sentence what would it be ? A. Deep. Really Deep"
